Pandit Shiv Kumar Sharma

Born in 1938 in Jammu in the state of Kashmir, Pandit Shiv Kumar Sharma began learning tabla and singing from his father at a young age. From the age of 12 he dedicated himself exclusively to the santoor, the trapezoid-shaped 100-string dulcimer, which is played with light wooden mallets. After years of studying he became a virtuoso player and has composed soundtracks to many films, sometimes with bansuri maestro Hariprasad Chaurasia. This helped popularize the santoor and he has released award-winning albums and won several gold discs. He has toured around the world and is one of the best known Indian musicians internationally, along with Ravi Shankar.

Following the family tradition, he taught santoor to his son Rahul Sharma, and he deserves to be proud of his disciple. Rahul brilliantly absorbs the classical legacy and, just like his father has done, carries it forwards to new generations and new audiences worldwide.
